I Present to you: Yvonne Brill, Rocket Scientist
Mrs. Brill passed this past week after a life full of chemistry and love. She was an amazing woman, the only woman believed to have been working on rocket science in the mid-1940’s and never received an official engineering degree but was highly skilled in chemistry and math. Mrs. Brill was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2010 for her work. She also received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama in 2011.
Not only was Mrs. Brill accomplished in her work but what I found to be even more intriguing was her constant relocation based on her husband’s career as well as her raising of three children all at the same time. Mrs. Brill was dedicated to her work and did not allow her situation or gender to dissuade her from furthering her career.
I think we could call take a hint from Mrs. Brill, especially in a world where science and engineering is still considered a man’s job. Let’s all work to shift the conversation and encourage our young girls to educate themselves in science and technology.
